Unjustified Missed Penalty: After BVB's Agitation, Referee Stegemann Admits Mistake

Missed Penalty in BVB Game

In a recent Bundesliga match, Borussia Dortmund (BVB) was left fuming after a crucial penalty was not awarded in their favour. The incident occurred during the game against Freiburg, and the referee, Patrick Ittrich, waved away Dortmund's appeals for a spot-kick. Replays showed that Freiburg's Philipp Lienhart had clearly brought down Dortmund's Marco Reus inside the penalty area.

Referee's Admission

After the match, referee Marco Fritz, who was the video assistant referee (VAR) for the game, admitted that it was a clear penalty that should have been given. He stated that there was "no clear view" for Ittrich to make the correct decision on the field, and that he should have intervened to award the penalty.

The admission of error by Fritz has caused further controversy, with many questioning why the VAR system did not overturn Ittrich's decision. The incident has reignited the debate about the use of VAR in football, with some arguing that it is not being used effectively enough to correct clear and obvious errors.
